India clinches overall championship title

ALAPPUZHA: India, logging 378 points, lifted the overall championship title ahead of Uzbekistan (174) and Iran (169) as the 17th Asian powerlifting championship concluded at the Raiban auditorium here on Tuesday. Besides its maiden overall title, the home team also won eight of the ten team championship titles at stake even as it ended its campaign in the four-day event with a haul of 43 gold, 33 silver and six bronze medals.

The home side won six out of the 12 gold medals decided on Tuesday. However, the real hero of the day was the strapping Huang Tz Yi (Chinese Taipei), who accounted for two new Asian records while dominating the sub-junior section of the 125kg men's weight category.

The 17-year-old registered a new high in the benchpress (165kg) before he finished with a record total of 640kg ahead of India's Surajit Das who could compile only a total of 567.5kg, after having re-written the existing record in the squat (260kg). The competition in the junior section of the same weight category also saw Uzbekistan's Sardo Tuyehiyev eclipse the existing continental record in deadlift with a final attempt of 330kg. In the race for the gold in this class, Tuyehiyev and Iran's Hossein Rahini Kazerooni had an identical total of 812.5kg before the former was declared the winner on lesser body weight.

Yulia Stesenka (Uzbekistan), the winner of the junior gold in the women's 90kg weight division was also in the spotlight as she set a new Asian squat record of 225kg and then equalled the existing record of 200kg in the deadlift. The young Uzbek lifter had a 100kg lead over India's T. Sajitha Raj as she clinched the gold with a total of 540kg.

The Kerala Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, who was the chief guest at the closing ceremony, gave away the prizes. The Tourism Minister, K.C.Venugopal, presided.
