ALAPPUZHA: The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has called for a new culture that gives importance to consensus among various groups on issues related to development. Inaugurating an integrated drinking water supply and sanitation scheme at Sarvodayapuram here on Tuesday, Mr. Chandy said the Government alone could not bring about development. It needed the cooperation from various sections. The scheme at Sarvodayapuram is being implemented by the Socio-Economic Unit Foundation (SEUF) with the help of nine non-governmental organisations and the Netherlands Government. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.22 crores.
Judicious management
The Chief Minister pointed out that drinking water shortage could occur even if the State received good rain. Judicious management of water resources was needed of the hour. The cooperation of local bodies and beneficiary groups was necessary to implement development projects successfully, he added. The Minister for Water Resources, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who presided over the function, said voluntary organisations should organise programmes to make people aware of the need for preserving water. The Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, inaugurated a water-testing laboratory on the SEUF premises.
