Kharge criticises Aiyar's remarks

BANGALORE: The Minister for Water Resources and Transport, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, has said the State is facing a severe drought for the fourth consecutive year, and there is no water in the reservoirs to be shared with Tamil Nadu.

Addressing presspersons after a meeting to review major irrigation projects here today, Mr. Kharge took exception to the statement made by the Union Minister for Petroleum an Natural Gas and Panchayat Raj, Mani Shankar Aiyar, that Tamil Nadu has been denied fairness and justice in the sharing of Cauvery waters. "We are ready to share Cauvery water if Mr. Aiyar brings rain by performing magic. How can a hungry man provide food to another person," Mr. Kharge asked. The State had released 202 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu till the end of April 2005, he said. — Special Correspondent

Petitions to be filed against VAT

MYSORE: The leader of Azadi Bachao Andolan, Rajiv Dixit, today said the organisation is contemplating filing public interest litigation petitions in various High Courts in the country against the implementation of value added tax (VAT).

Mr. Dixit told presspersons here on Tuesday that the VAT regime had been introduced in a hurry and the law is undemocratic. Though officials have been stating that the new regime will ensure transparency, the unlimited powers vested with the bureaucracy could lead to an increase in corruption.

JD(S) to hold convention in Shimoga

SHIMOGA: The Working President of the Janata Dal (S), H.D. Kumaraswamy, has said that his party will announce its candidate for the coming byelection to the Lok Sabha from Shimoga after the party workers' convention, which will be held here on Thursday.

He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the workers' convention will be addressed, among others, by the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda. Important decisions will be taken at the conventions regarding the coming taluk and zilla panchayat elections in addition to the Lok Sabha byelection. — Special Correspondent

Cardiac team

to share expertise

Bangalore: The Bangalore cardiac team of Wockhardt Hospitals under the leadership of Vivek Jawali, cardiac surgeon, will lend their expertise at various hospitals across the country, including both of Wockhardt's dedicated heart hospitals in Hyderabad. The team will help perform conscious off-pump coronary bypass surgery and `awake' heart surgery in these hospitals. The two hospitals will also be linked with all other heart hospitals in the Wockhardt group facilitating knowledge exchange between them. — Staff Reporter

Village to use only khadi

DHARWAD: Uppinabetageri village near here is to become a complete khadi village. A decision to this effect was taken at the first meeting of the gram panchayat held in the village on Saturday. The panchayat also decided to seek the permission of the Government to provide khadi uniform to schoolchildren.

The decision to go khadi comes in the wake of the role the village has been playing in running a khadi production centre. — Special Correspondent

Governor mourns

Lt. Gen. Aurora

BANGALORE: The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi has mourned the death of Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora (retired), who accepted the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers led by Lt. Gen. A.A.A. Niazi in Dacca after the 1971 war with Pakistan.

In a message, Mr. Chaturvedi said the Gen. Aurora was a distinguished soldier and a man of high principles. In his death, the country had lost a national hero and a valiant soldier. — Special Correspondent

4,536 appear for CET

DHARWAD: As many as 4,536 candidates appeared for the common entrance test conducted in nine examination centres in Hubli-Dharwad on Tuesday. While all the candidates appeared for the mathematics examination in the afternoon, only 3,981 appeared for the biology paper in the morning. — Special Correspondent (Detailed report on Page 4)

Summer camp for children

DHARWAD: Chaitra Chiguru, a summer camp for children of primary and secondary schools of Dharwad district, will be organised under the auspices of the Directorate of Public Instruction from May 17 to May 24 at Haribhat Composite Pre University College in Kundgol.

According to press note issued here, the camp is open for students studying in standards five to 10. Those interested have been asked to obtain application forms from the Office the Block Education Officer, Kundgol, or from the Haribhat Composite Pre University College. — Special Correspondent

Pulse Polio

on May 15

DHARWAD: It has been decided to cover 2.20 lakh children in the second round of Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme on May 15 in Dharwad district.

This was disclosed at a meeting convened here on Tuesday to discuss the issue. It was decided to include youths to work as volunteers in the wards. As many as 938 vaccine centres, including 66 mobile centres, would be set up it was stated. — Special Correspondent
