Additional tax likely on evening lotteries

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The Government, which is contemplating measures to counter lottery draws in the evening (6 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.) by private agencies, plans to seek legal advice to impose additional tax on them, the Minister for Lotteries and Small Savings, Basavaraj Horatti, has said.

He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the Government could also organise two-digit lottery draws in the evening to discourage private lotteries. But it will not do so as it might prompt the private lotteries to increase their number of evening draws, he said.

The Government has imposed a tax of Rs. 1 lakh on each private lottery draw. But it is collecting only Rs. 50, 000 only for each draw owing to the directions of the Karnataka High Court, he said.
