`Kalpvriksh-2003'

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, on Tuesday said that small savings formed the backbone of the Government's resource generation efforts and that their contribution to the development of the city was tremendous.

Speaking at "Kalpvriksh-2003'', a function organised by the Delhi Government to give award prizes as encouragement to small savings, Ms. Dikshit informed that small savings in Delhi amounted to a whopping Rs. 7,873 crores, which had risen from a mere Rs. 350 crores about 10 years ago.

Economic census

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Finance Minister, A.K.Walia, on Tuesday said the economic census, which is the complete official count of all economic activities, will be carried out in the Capital during May-June this year. . The present economic census is the fifth in the series under the Centrally- sponsored scheme of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The first economic census was conducted in 1977.

Media website

NEW DELHI: Asia Media Forum, recently formed by a group of journalists from nine Asian countries, launched its website on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday. The website will be a space for journalists to share insights on issues related to the media as well as stories, information and opinions on democracy, development and human rights in Asia. The website is hosted and coordinated by Inter Press Service (IPS) Asia Pacific in collaboration with ActionAid, an international development organisation.

Foundation Day

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) celebrated its 11th Foundation Day in the Capital on Tuesday. About 25 Metro employees from the civil, electrical, signalling and telecommunication wings who performed outstandingly in 2004-05 were presented awards by the Lieutenant-Governor, B.L. Joshi, on the occasion. The award included a medal and Rs.5, 000 in cash.

Master Plan

NEW DELHI: To evaluate the past Master Plans of Delhi and exchange ideas on the Draft Master Plan for 2021, a seminar will be organised jointly by the Diwan Chand Institute of National Affairs and the PHDCCI at the PHD House here on May 7.

Ticketless travellers

NEW DELHI: Beginning its two-month-long special drive against ticketless travellers and unbooked luggage carriers on local trains on Tuesday, Northern Railway penalised 446 travellers and realised over Rs.1.38 lakh from them.
