VIJAYAWADA: Moderate to strong gales followed by rain on Tuesday caused extensive damage to the mango crop that is ready for harvest in Krishna district. The fruit that falls from tree is considered damaged and realises poor price. Though there are no signs of damage on the partially ripe fruit, patches appear on ripening. The Horticulture Assistant Director, M. Venkateswarlu, told The Hindu on Tuesday that all officers of the department were camping in Nuzvid to estimate the damage. He said the official would prepare estimates village wise. The extent of damage would be estimated more specifically on the basis of the number of mangoes that fell from individual trees selected at random. "We will have a better picture of the damage on Wednesday," he said. Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham president, Kolli Nageswara Rao, in a statement, asked the Government grant compensation for mango growers who had suffered extensive loss in Warangal and Nalgonda districts. Mr. Nageswara Rao said that mango growers were caught off guard by the untimely rain. He said mango crop in thousands of acres in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Mahabubnagar, Kurnool, Chittoor, Cuddapah, Guntur, Krishna, West Godavari and Warangal districts was affected by gales and even hailstorm in the last one month. He urged the Government to act fast and grant compensation to the farmers. According to reports from Khammam, mango growers suffered heavy loss due to unexpected rain and gales in the last couple of days.
