Rowdysheeter stoned to death

Rajahmundry: People revolted against a rowdysheeter and stoned him to death here on Monday night. According to the DSP, P.H.D. Ramakrishna, Maddi Asirwada Kumar alias Asirwadam (35) was stoned by the public at Sarangadhara Metta TV Tower area first and then beaten up with iron rods and sticks. He was rushed to Civil Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries on Tuesday morning. - Staff Reporter

Courier, naxal held

KARIMNAGAR: The police arrested a courier and a militant belonging to the CPI-ML Praja Prathigatana naxalite group from a hotel here on Tuesday. They were allegedly resorting to extortion. The police also picked up a contractor from the lodge. Police sources gave the names of the courier and the militant as Suryanarayana Reddy alias Satti Reddy (28) and Srinivas Goud. Already the militants had collected Rs. 4 lakhs from a sand quarry contractor and Rs. 1 lakh from a businessman. - Staff Reporter

Congress activist murdered

CUDDAPAH: A Congress activist, Thallamapuram Subbanna (65), was hacked to death by four TDP activists at Lingapuram in Proddatur mandal on Tuesday afternoon. Bandi Nadipi Nagi Reddy and three others killed him with hunting sickles, according to the police. The murder was a fall-out of a property dispute, the police said. - Staff Reporter

Low pressure over Bay

VISAKHAPATNAM: A trough of low pressure area lies over south Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood, according to a weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here. Under its influence, rain is likely at many places over south coastal Andhra and at a few places over north coastal Andhra in next 36 hours.

Bail plea rejected

ANANTAPUR: The District and Sessions Court here on Tuesday rejected bail of 11 accused persons in the Paritala Ravindra murder case. The judge, S. Chinnaiah, rejected the bail stating that it would have an adverse impact on the case as investigation was still in progress. - Staff Reporter

Thotapally displaced reject State offer

VIZIANAGARAM: Thotapally project victims have rejected the Government offer of 10 per cent increase on the district-level committee's recommendation of additional 50 per cent, and demanded 100 per cent compensation as promised by the Minister for Forests, S. Vijayarama Raju. The victims under the aegis of CPI(M) met at Naviri, near Parvathipuram, on Monday and rejected the offer. - Correspondent

Tension in Bhainsa

ADILABAD: Prompt action by the Bhainsa police saved the situation on Tuesday after workers of the Congress, the BSP and the MIM clashed over a trivial issue. Congress and BSP workers noticed a signboard outside the Municipal Chairman, Jabir's (MIM) office, which designated him as MLA. This enraged the workers who allegedly manhandledthe Commissioner, Srinivas. Before the situation took an ugly turn, the police intervened and restored calm. Excise officials seize rectified spirit

Sangareddy: A team of excise officials has seized six plastic barrels of rectified spirit from a van on Monday night on NH-9, near Kankol crossroads, and arrested five persons. The Excise Superintendent, N. Sailaja, on Tuesday said the market value of 210 litres of spirit would be around Rs. 4 lakhs. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: T. Narasimhan, secretary of the AITUC State Council, has been nominated as member of the reconstituted Minimum Wages Advisory Board for a period of two years. The board, with Babar Saleem Pasha as chairman, has nine members. - Staff Reporter

Zakir Hussain remembered

NELLORE: Rich tributes were paid to the former President of India, late Zakir Hussain, on the occasion of his 36th death anniversary on Tuesday. At a programme arranged near his statue at Venkateswarapuram centre on the outskirts of Nellore town, a number of dignitaries including the Minister for Primary Education, N. Rajyalakshmi, the Nellore M.L.A, Anam Vivekananda Reddy, and the chairman of the district Congress minority wing, S.A.M. Hussainy, participated. NELLORE: Functionaries of `Stree Vimukthi', Organisation for Protection of Democratic Rights (OPDR) and National Youth Samakhya staged a dharna on Tuesday at the Gandhi statue centre demanding withdrawal of `unlawful' cases against their colleagues who demanded justice in the suspicious death of Padmalatha, a nursing student of Nellore town, on April 18. . They demanded action against the proprietors of the nursing school. Later they submitted a memorandum to the District Revenue Officer.__Staff Reporter

Move to better

drinking water supply

KURNOOL: The Municipal Corporation has proposed to improve drinking water supply under the Critical Infrastructure Improvement Project (CIIP) at a cost Rs. 10 crores. The Collector and Special Officer, Vikas Raj, at a review meeting with officials, cleared the proposal for the CIIP. The amount would be used for improving the drinking water supply system in the newly merged Kallur township.
