Panel declines nod for release of three cotton varieties
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI:
The high-power Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) of the Ministry of Environment and Forests on Tuesday refused permission for commercial release of three hybrid cotton varieties in Andhra Pradesh for their "unsatisfactory performance."
The decision was taken after the GEAC received reports from the State that the performance of these varieties was not satisfactory. The committee had sought report from Andhra Pradesh in the previous meeting after surveys by several non-governmental organisations showed that farmers had suffered losses as the yield was much less than what had been claimed by Mahyco-Monsanto.
The GEAC, however, did approve the commercial release of MECH-12 Bt cotton variety in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, but refused its sale in the southern zone, according to an official spokesperson.
