HYDERABAD: The National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd on Tuesday informed the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, that it had no plans to take up expansion of the Simhadri thermal project in the 11th Plan. This was in response to Dr. Reddy's suggestion to the corporation to increase the plant's capacity by another 1,000 MW. Talking to reporters after meeting the Chief Minister, the NTPC Chairman and Managing Director, C.P. Jain, said the expansion proposals for the Simhadri project were included in the 12th Pan. According to NTPC sources, the expansion plan for Simhadri was not being considered in the 11th Plan due to lack of coal linkage. "At present we are running the plant with reserves for a day or half-a-day. The coal position is quite critical." The sources expressed the hope that the position might improve by 12th Plan period. Mr. Jain said the NTPC was planning to add 4000 to 5000 MW during the 11th Plan by setting up hydro projects in various parts of the country.
Projects in pipeline
``We have given our expression of interest...they will examine our report," he added. Mr. Jain said the NTPC proposed to set up four hydro projects for generating an additional 1488 MW in Uttaranchal. Agreement had already been signed for two of them. Three more projects for generating 3,000 MW were on the anvil in Arunachal Pradesh.
