ANANTAPUR: All development and welfare schemes in the district would be kept on hold till the byelection in the Penukonda Assembly constituency, scheduled for June 2, was conducted, the District Collector, Y.V. Anuradha, said here on Tuesday. Ms. Anuradha told presspersons that except drought works no other work would be undertaken in the entire district as the model code of conduct had already come into force. The district administration had written to the ECI and the State Government seeking clarification on the conduct of the Praja Patham programme in the wake of announcement of the byelection, the Collector said. Carrying on with the programme would have some practical problems for the administration, she noted. However, Rythu Chaitanya Yatras would continue as scheduled.

Notification for the byelection would be issued on May 5 and the last date for filing nominations would be May 16. Scrutiny of nominations would be conducted on May 17 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations would be May 19. Polling would be held on June 2 and counting of votes would be taken up on June 5. Meanwhile, the Minister for Animal Husbandry, G. Surya Rao, who is on a visit to the district for participation in Praja Patham was withdrawn of all official arrangements.
