ANANTAPUR: The Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee has no reservations in speaking to the victims of naxalite violence provided they are not doing it so at the behest of the police, the State general secretary of the organisation, S. Seshaiah, said here on Tuesday. He was reacting to the Monday's attempt of a naxal-victim family in the district to meet and question him here on the killing of their kin by the Maoists last month at P. Kondapuram village in Ramagiri mandal. Talking to newspersons, he said that the recent incidents of naxalite victims taking to agitations and voicing against the rights organisations in the district -- first the indefinite fast taken up by the wife and children of N. Sainath Reddy, of Narsimpalli village in Bukkapatnam mandal, who was killed by Maoists, and the attempt of the family members of G. Adinarayana of P. Kondapuram on Monday -- was planned by the district police to force the APCLC and other such outfits on the backfoot. Prof. Seshaiah said the State police had taken a decision to conduct meetings and encourage agitations against naxalites after the breakdown of peace process. He alleged that the police was trying to suppress the rights bodies and people's organisations, particularly the APCLC and Virasam, as they were in the forefront of opposing fake encounters and State violence perpetrated by the police. About 130 rights activists were taken into custody illegally by the police after the Maoist bid on the life of Prakasam SP, M.C. Laddha, Prof. Seshaiah said. They should be either released or be produced in the court immediately, he demanded. The mere condemnation of violent acts of either the police or the naxalites would not solve the problem, he said. The APCLC had always demanded action against the naxalites as per law, if they indulged in killing or unlawful activities. But, seeking clarification from the APCLC after every naxal-violence incident by the police was illogical, he observed. How could the rights body take the responsibility for the Maoist acts, he sought to know. It did not mean that the APCLC was supporting naxalites, if it questions the fake encounters, he said. Prof. Seshaiah asked the police to stop terrorising the rights bodies and instead make efforts to restore peace in the villages by reviving the dialogue with the naxalites.
