Approval for Kabini project to be sought soon

Coalition Government committed to completion of irrigation projects: Mallikarjuna Kharge

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The Minister for Water Resources and Transport, M. Mallikarjuna Kharge, has said that efforts will be made to get the Cabinet approval to implement the Kabini Second Stage Lift Irrigation Project soon after the survey is completed in June. He was speaking after inaugurated the new KSRTC Bus-depot here on Monday. He said the cost for the Kabini project has increased from Rs. 600 crores to Rs. 1,233 crores. The project will use 9.22 tmcft of water to irrigate 1.35 lakh acres. He stressed the need to expedite the project and sought the cooperation of MLAs from the district to get clearance from the Central Departments of Forestry, Environment, and Public Works.

Mr. Kharge said the coalition Government has given priority to irrigation and 9 per cent of the total allocation has been made for irrigation projects. He said that Rs. 300 crores was spent last year on the Cauvery Niravari Nigam projects.

Mr. Kharge praised the MLAs from the district and the Chamarajanagar MP, Shivanna, for taking up development works in the district. He said the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has done a good job in providing better facilities to passengers.

KSRTC facilities

Describing the development works of the KSRTC in Mysore, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts, Mr. Kharge said the Transport Department has decided to run 5,000 new buses in the State. He said that of the 623 village routes in the district, KSRTC buses ply on 322 village routes. He said various development works have been taken up including the construction of a bus stop and bus depot at the cost of Rs. 5.81 crore on the Mysore Rural Transport Division premises.

The Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, H.S. Mahadevaprasad, felicitated 27 drivers for having an accident-free record for 5 years. He appealed to Mr. Kharge to expedite the implementation of the Kabini project.

The Chamarajanagar MP, Shivanna, urged the Transport Minister to extend city bus services to areas in a 15-km radius and urged him not to shift the Divisional Transport Office from Chamarajanagar to Mandya district.

The Chamarajanagar MLA and president of the Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha, Vatal Nagaraj, has urged the Government to increase the height of the Almatti dam to utilise the entire share of Krishna waters allocated to the State.

The Deputy Commissioner, Harsha Gupta; the Sourthern Range IGP, Kempaiah; the Managing Director of KSRTC, M.R. Srinivasa Murthy; zilla panchayat president, Bharthi Nagaraj; and vice-president, Doreraj, were present.
