MYSORE: The sleuths attached to the City Crime Branch arrested two persons on the charge of extortion and have recovered from them valuables worth over Rs. 1 lakh. The police said that the arrested Inayathulla (24), a resident of Kengeri, and Syed Akbar (22), a resident of Mysore, were involved in extortion of mobile phones, money and gold ornaments. The Crime Branch police arrested them on Sunday near Idgah in N.R. Mohalla. Sources said that the accused confessed to being involved in four cases of extortion that have been reported. The police said that in the first case reported in June 2004, the accused robbed two residents of Yadavagiri in Devaraja Mohalla. They reportedly robbed two engineering students in July 2004, a tourist during the famous Jamboo Savari in October 2004, and two others near Kalinga Hotel in January 2005. The accused have been remanded in judicial custody till May 16.
Murder accused arrested
The N.R. police arrested four persons in connection with the murder of a watchman at St. Philomena's College recently. The police said that the accused, Alwin, Nayaz, Jaheed and Somashekar, murdered Vergheese, the watchman of the college, on January 5 after they were caught robbing the college administrative office. The police said that the group had broken into the administrative office and were trying to decamp with Rs. 6,000 when Vergheese stopped them. The sources said that the main accused, Alwin, confessed to killing Vergheese. The K.R. police arrested a woman on the charge of attempting to murder her husband on Chamundi Hills. The police said that Ansuya was arrested for attempting to murder her husband, Shivanna, a resident of Hunsur, by pushing him down a deep gorge. Shivanna died at K.R. Hospital on Monday evening. Shivanna gave a statement to the police implicating his wife, Asuya. The police arrested Ansuya based on the statement. The K.R. police have registered a case.
