MYSORE: The proposed Textile and Readymade Garments Park in Mysore seems to be a non-starter with very few entrepreneurs evincing interest to invest on textile units at the park. Although the authorities were expecting around 100 units to come up at the proposed park, the District Industries Centre, the coordinating agency, has received only 16 applications so far. The District Industries Centre conducted a demand survey for the park recently and the response from entrepreneurs was lukewarm. Besides the park in Mysore, the State Government has proposed to set up similar textile parks under the Industries Infrastructure Development Programme in Belguam, Ramanagaram, and Kanakapura.
Ancillary units
Sources in the industries centre told The Hindu that most of the 16 applications have come from entrepreneurs interested in setting up ancillary or tiny units. The textile park can become viable with a minimum of 100 units, and these units could witness a healthy growth if big textile mills invest in the project. However, so far, none of the bigger players have evinced interest in setting up units at the park. The textile park is expected to come up on an area of around 250 acres at Kochanahalli village, near here, and investments have been invited in setting up of modern powerlooms, silk reeling, twisting, processing and readymade garments. The Powerloom Development Corporation has been made the nodal agency to coordinate activities.
Large-scale investment
Sources said that the response in the demand survey came mostly from local entrepreneurs, who sought an area between half an acre and two acres for setting up ancillary and tiny units. However, bigger units are required to sustain the functioning of the smaller units. Officials with the District Industries Centre said that even they did not know the eventual cost of land and facilities as the State Government is still in the process of acquiring land for the project. Inadequate publicity, seeking investments in the textile park, outside the district is also one of the reasons for the low response, the officials stated.
Feasibility study
Meanwhile, the Assistant Director of the Powerloom Development Corporation, Suresh Kumar, said that a study is being taken up to ascertain the feasibility of the project. The corporation will ask the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board to acquire land for the textile park only after the study is completed, he added. Though Kochanahalli has been identified as a potential location for the textile park, the authorities are considering Sindhuvalli and Tilur as alternative locations.
