BELLARY: Keeping in view the plight of farmers owing to successive droughts, the State Government has decided to waive interest on crop loans if the farmers repay the principal amount by June 30. The Revenue Minister, M.P. Prakash, said that interest and penal interest on loans obtained prior to March 31, 2004, will be waived if the principal amount is paid by the announced date. He urged farmers, who have obtained agricultural loans from primary cooperative agriculture and rural development banks, to avail themselves of this benefit announced by the State Government. He noted that in Bellary district, the Primary Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Bank is yet to recover dues totalling Rs. 21.93 crores as on March 31, 2005, of which the State Government will pay Rs. 10.40 crores.
New loans
He noted that if the farmers clear the loans at the earliest, it will help the Government to consider releasing fresh loans for the current year.
