Survey to identify child labourers in Chitradurga

Staff Correspondent

CHITRADURGA: The Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, has instructed officers to take up a survey to identify child labourers in the district.

Chairing a meeting to discuss the implementation of an anti-child labour plan here on Monday, he told the officials to prepare an action plan to rehabilitate child labourers in the district.

The Union Government has sanctioned Rs. 4.58 lakhs to the "Child Labour Project Society" to conduct the survey, he said. He wanted taluk-wise teams to be formed to take up the task of identifying child labourers at the village-level, and a district-level committee to be set up to monitor the activities. The survey should be completed within 15 days, he added.

In the previous survey conducted during 2001-02, 42 children were found to be engaged by hazardous industries while 1,019 children were working in other sectors.

A total of 1,061 child labourers were identified of which 659 children were sent to seven residential schools for child labourers.

Girija Pujari Ningappa, President of the Chitradurga Zilla Panchayat; S.H. Vijaya Kumar, Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner; C.M. Noor Ahmed, Assistant Commissioner; and other officers participated in the meeting.
