CPI(M) to pick bypoll candidates by weekend

LDF State committee will meet on Saturday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: : The State CPI(M) would pick its candidates for the June 2 byelection in Azhikode and Koothuparamba by the end of this week.

An emergency meeting of the party State committee is being held here on Friday to pick the party nominees. The Kannur district committee of the party would meet on Thursday to identify the potential candidates. The LDF State committee would meet on Saturday to finalise the candidates, which would but be a formality because the candidate selection would already have been done by the CPI(M).

The byelection in Azhikode has been necessitated by the death of T. K. Balan on April 17 and the nullification of P. Jayarjan's election from Koothuparamba by the Supreme Court pointing out that Mr. Jayarajan had been sentenced to two years' imprisonment before he contested in the 2001 Assembly election. The byelections have been ordered as the tenure of the present Assembly exceeds six months.

The Election Commission would issue the poll notification on May 9. The last date for filing of nominations is May 16 and the scrutiny would take place the next day. The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is May 19.

The model code of conduct has come into effect.

Balan had won the 2001 election from Azhikode defeating his immediate Communist Marxist Party (CMP) rival, C. A. Ajeer, by a margin of 9,796 votes. Mr. Jayarajan had won the Koothuparamba seat by defeating his Congress rival K. Prabhakaran by a margin of 8,620 votes.
