KANNUR: Five persons were injured, one seriously, when a concrete slab collapsed in a house that was under construction at Payyambalam here on Tuesday. The police said that the incident occurred at 12.30 p.m. when the workers were constructing the concrete slab on the first floor of an old house at Payyambalam. The newly-laid concrete slab on the ground floor caved in while they were at work. P. Fathima, 45, a construction worker from Pulluppikkadavu, sustained serious injuries when a piece of the slab fell on her leg. Her leg was nearly severed. R. Mani, Kaveri, Rajani and Murugan, all migrant workers from Tamil Nadu, sustained injuries. They have been admitted with minor injuries.The police and fire personnel extricated the injured from the debris. The contractor Jayanand of Pallikkunnu Idachery was arrested in connection with the accident. The accident is said to have occurred due to the non-implementation of building rules.
