Mujahid convention to focus on divorce issue

Special Correspondent

Three-day meet at Kottakkal begins on Friday

KOZHIKODE: The recent decision of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on the validity of `triple talaq' would be among the issues that would be the focus of discussions during a three-day North Kerala Mujahid convention to be held from May 6 to 8 at Kottakkal in Malappuram district.

Elaborate arrangements have been made for the convention. The organisers expect nearly 50,000 delegates from the six districts in North Kerala for the event.

This was stated at a Press conference on Tuesday by Hussain Madavoor, State general secretary Kerala Naduvathul Mujahideen; E.K. Ahmedkutty, programme committee chairman of the convention, and P.P. Abdul Haq, convener of the programme committee.

A chief guest would be Fahd Althani, political analyst and academic from Qatar. He is a member of Qatar royal family. The Union Minister of State for External Affairs, E. Ahamed, and Usma Naheed, Executive Director of Iqra Foundation, Mumbai, and member of the AIMPLB, have also confirmed their attendance.

Dr. Hussain Madavoor said arrangements had been made for a public meeting on May 8 where nearly one lakh participants were expected. Live webcasting of the programmes on the three days of the conference had been arranged.

Reservations

Dr. Hussain Madavoor, a frontline leader of the breakaway group of the Kerala Naduvathul Mujahideen, told said his organisation always had reservations about `triple talaq' form of divorce in Muslim community since it "undermined the rights granted to women under Islamic laws.''

In his view, man should not pronounce `triple talaq' unless there was no way the couple could live together as man and wife.

Another point of discussion would be the response of minorities to the recent moves by the NSS and the SNDP to forge an alliance of Nairs and Ezhavas.

The convention would also discuss development of minorities in Malappuram district in the fields of education, particularly higher education in the light of the controversial statement on this subject made by CPI(M) leader, V.S. Achuthanandnan, voting rights of non-resident Indians, moves for unity among Muslim outfits and investment potential of Gulf Malayalis.
