Keep abreast of changes: Governor

MANGALORE: Advancement in science and technology fails if the benefits of research do not reach the common people. Medical graduates should strive to ensure that advanced medical facilities reach the poor in society, said T.N. Chaturvedi, Governor, on Tuesday.

He was addressing a gathering at the graduation ceremony of the first batch MBBS students of Yenepoya Medical College, Deralakatte, near here. Mr. Chaturvedi called upon the fresh graduates to keep pace with the latest developments in the medical sector and respond to the challenges of time.

New diseases provide formidable challenge to the medical faculty. The concept of health has changed over the years. People in the medical profession should be sensitised to alleviate the pain of the people.

The Governor advised young doctors to cultivate social sensitivity and rise above from self-interest. Underlining the need to maintain ethics of the profession, he said this was the need of the hour. Developments in technology have helped the medical sector immensely. Telemedicine has enabled exchange of speedy information. He said medical education should be an instrument of empowerment and at the same time an instrument of social obligation.

In all, 93 MBBS graduates have passed out of the college. The college had sponsored the education of Aboobacker M.A., a native of Kasaragod and an orphan. The college managed by the Islamic Academy of Education sponsors the entire medical education of an orphan student every year.

The Minister for Medical Education, Iqbal Ansari, the Chairman of Islamic Academy of Education, Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi, the principal of the college, A. Ramachandran, and the trustee of the Islamic Academy of Education, Y. Mohammed Kunhi, participated.
