MANGALORE: If you get admission in medical colleges under the government quota, then you may have to serve in rural areas compulsorily after becoming a doctor. The State Government will enact a law to make candidates who get admission under the government quota to serve in rural areas compulsorily for at least two years, said Iqbal Ansari, Minister for Medical Education, here on Tuesday. Speaking to presspersons, he said that this is to ensure that candidates who become doctors by availing government facilities serve the people in rural areas. Mr. Ansari said that candidates who seek admission under government quota will have to sign a bond in this regard. He said that the Government will impose a fine on those who fail to act as per the bond. The Minister said that the Government was planning to open three or four government medical colleges in the State in addition to the six already announced. Those colleges would be opened in areas where there are no government and private medical colleges. One each will be opened in Gulbarga and Uttara Kannada districts. As per requirement, a medical college should have a 400-bed capacity hospital. When opening new government medical colleges, the existing district hospital will be upgraded to suit the requirements. Mr. Ansari said that the Government is planning to open an Ayurveda section in each district hospital. A Cabinet sub-committee has given its approval for the same. The proposal will be placed before the Cabinet seeking approval. He distributed hearing aids and wheel chairs to the disabled free of cost at M. V. Shetty College of Speech and Hearing, Kavoor. In all, 25 hearing equipment and two wheel chairs were distributed.
