CHENNAI: A person whose identity was unknown and who was operated upon for a head injury died after surgery at the Government General Hospital here. His father later identified the body at the GH mortuary on Monday morning. According to police, Mohanasundaram (35), was admitted unconscious to a hospital in Ashok Nagar with complaints of stomach pain, and was referred to the Royapettah Government Hospital. The authorities there sent him to the Government General Hospital on Saturday (April 30). Doctors who admitted the patient, who is believed to be a drug addict, advised an X-ray and scan. Mohanasundaram's companion left him at the hospital to return home to arrange for funds. Mohanasundaram regained consciousness meanwhile and walked out of the hospital. He was found unconscious on Mint Street on Sunday morning, and brought to the GH by member of the public. Doctors operated on him suspecting a head injury. Mohanasundaram died at 8.20 a.m. after the operation on Monday. That evening, Mohanasundaram's father, Murthy, returned to the hospital. When he insisted that the body be handed to him, he was told that since the body was registered as that of an unknown person, a post-mortem was necessary. Mr. Murthy refused to take possession of the body if a post-mortem was done. The GH police intervened to ensure that autopsy was done before the body was returned to the family on Tuesday.
