CHENNAI: A massive mimusops tree, on the Nungambakkam police station premises, became the victim of development on Tuesday. The old police station building has been demolished, where a new building is coming up. Naturalists and environmentalists in the city suggested that instead of chopping the tree, the authorities could have considered transplanting it. Already in a few places in the city, transplantation had been done successfully and the trees had survived, tree lovers said. Naturalists stated that after completing the construction work, the department should plant at least a dozen saplings inside the station. Another tree lover suggested that each constable in the station should plant one sapling.
