Anti-social elements `behind encroachments'

Temporary structures on poramboke land at Nolumbur

CHENNAI: Residents of Nolambur, situated off Maduravoyal, fear that the burial ground maintained by their panchayat will soon vanish due to rampant encroachment.

A visit to the spot last week revealed that several hutments had come up on the burial ground and also the nearby poramboke lands. The residents allege that the encroachments were being carried out by anti-social elements, headed by a person who is facing several cases of kidnapping and extortion. One resident, on condition of anonymity, said the group of encroachers would wreck havoc in the houses of those who dared question them. "They would turn up as a group at the houses of those who complained against them to the police and harass the families, especially the women."

Officials at the Ambattur Tahsildar's office reached the site last week in a bid to remove the temporary structures but were surprised when the encroachers threatened self-immolation if they went ahead. "We hope to return next week with police protection to carry out the evictions," an official said.

The residents, meanwhile, accuse the administration and the police of acting in connivance with the encroachers.

Officials say much of the hullabaloo was happening because of a fight between two factions to encroach the government land.

Real-estate development has been heating up in and around Maduravoyal in recent times. Residents fear that if the Government does not act soon the land grabbers might have the last laugh.
