NCW team meets rape victim
Special Correspondent
MUMBAI:
The daylight rape of a 16-year-old college girl and the future of the women who dance in bars were issues that brought two representatives of the National Commission on Women (NCW) to Mumbai. Ms. Nafisa Hussein, a member of the NCW, told The Hindu that they were most concerned about the growing incidence of violence against women in cities such as Mumbai and Delhi. "If this kind of incident [the rape] can happen in the day and that too by the police, then it is a very serious matter," she said.
Bar girls issue
The NCW delegation also met representatives of women working in dance bars and their union organiser Varsha Kale as well as members of organisations that supported the ban on the bars. "Many of the women told us that they were old and tired and did not want to go back to this kind of work," she said. Therefore, she said it was important to think about the livelihood and rehabilitation of these women.
