Water supply cut off to Coffee Board layout in the city

BESCOM says municipal council has not installed meters to borewell pumps Association had been informed that if the problem was not rectified soon, power supply to the motors would be disconnected

BANGALORE: Residents of Coffee Board Layout are in the midst of a big water crisis. On Tuesday, Bangalore Electricity Company Ltd. (BESCOM) reportedly disconnected power supply to two borewells that supply drinking water to the area.

BESCOM officials said that the Byatarayanapura City Municipal Council has not installed any meters after connecting the borewell motors to the power supply line.

The CMC ought to have completed all formalities with BECOM before it began supplying water to residents, a resident of the layout, N.J. Kosal Ram, told The Hindu .

The layout has more than 300 houses, all of which depend on the borewells for drinking water supply.

"We had requested BESCOM not to take action till we sort out this problem with the CMC. Now they have cut the power supply to the borewells and we are left with no water supply and we have to suffer for the CMC's mistakes," lamented Hari Kanniah, Secretary of the Coffee Board Layout Residents and Site Owners' Association.

BESCOM, which got wind of the matter during a surprise check on April 12, had informed the association that the problem had to be rectified within the next seven to eight days, failing which power supply to the motors would be disconnected.

Concerned by this directive, the association wrote letters to the CMC Commissioner, the Director of Municipal Administration, and the Superintendent of Police, Vigilance, BESCOM, informing them of the problem.

However, the association has reportedly not received any response from the authorities to the letters sent on April 15, said Mr. Kannaiah.

Water charges

He said the CMC had collected Rs. 2,050 as water charges while connecting the water pipes.

It was also levying Rs. 45 a month as water supply charges from each resident. "The houses were supplied water once in three days for less than an hour," he said.

With BESCOM cutting off power supply to the borewells, the residents are in a quandary. Water tankers are their only hope now to address the daily drinking water needs.
