COIMBATORE: The District Supply Office and flying squad officials in the last few days seized large quantities of rice and kerosene, meant for distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS), to be diverted to the open market. On information, the District Revenue Officer, M. Karunakaran, deputed special teams for surprise checks. One team confiscated 19 bags of ration rice weighing 950 kg worth Rs. 11,500 concealed behind a jewellery shop near the Kanuvai bus stop. The flying squad conducted checks at an oil store in Rathnapuri Kannappa Nagar and found blue kerosene. It was meant to be converted into white by adding chemicals to evade action from officials. Three hundred litres of kerosene worth Rs. 9,600 was confiscated and owner of the oil store, Lingam, was arrested. In another incident, the officials raided residential premises at S.P. Nagar in Kavundampalayam and seized 18 plastic cans containing 35 litres each of PDS kerosene and another barrel containing 200 litres. The total value of kerosene seized was estimated at Rs. 25,600. A case was registered against Ramalingam, responsible for the black marketing.
