THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vice-Chancellor of the Central University, Pondicherry, A.K. Bhatnagar, on Tuesday said there should be more student-teacher interaction in the nation's classrooms.

"Today the students are very passive. The interaction they have with teachers inside the classrooms, I am sorry to say, is very poor," he said.

Dr. Bhatnagar was the chief guest at the Endowment Awards ceremony organised by the University of Kerala, here. Prizes, certificates and medals were given away to 102 students under various categories of endowments for the years 2001 and 2002.

Constructive criticism

Students can help teachers improve their academic standards by providing constructive criticism about their performance in class. This is as important as the teacher helping the students to do well in their studies.

In his presidential address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kerala, M.K. Ramachandran Nair, said the university was talking to industrial houses and research institutions to try and get them to institute endowments for modern disciplines of study such as management and bioinformatics. "This university's endowments established many years ago are for traditional areas of study. For the next academic year we should be able to institute some additional endowments which will lead to socially useful research work," he said.

The 102 prizes and medals given away on Tuesday included the `Sachivothama' prize instituted in the name of the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Travancore, C.P. Ramaswamy Iyer. The Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Kerala, V. Jayaprakash, the dean, faculty of science, Oommen V. Oomen, and the member of the Syndicate, Mohammed Kunhy Metharu, were among those who were present on the occasion.
