KOCHI: Senior officials of the Ministry of Human Resources and Development will visit the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) within two months to evaluate the progress made by the university in its attempt to become an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). This was decided at a meeting between P. K. Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University and Sudip Banerjee, Additional Secretary, Department of Higher Secondary and Higher Education, in New Delhi on Tuesday. Dr. Azis told The Hindu over telephone that the talks were `fruitful'. The University has been asked to prepare a tangible time-bound programme and prioritise its goals. Senior officials of the Ministry will also hold talks with the Government representatives during their visit It is learnt that the Ministry officials informed the university authorities that Cusat should change its present character to attain the status of an IIT. The university will have to change its admission and recruitment procedures as per the guidelines formulated for IITs in the country. Faculty members of the university should have doctoral degrees. There should be residential accommodation for the faculty. All the students should be provided with hostel facilities. The university will have to upgrade its academic and infrastructural facilities on par with other IITs. Dr.Azis said that the State Government has assured all help for upgrading Cusat into an IIT.
