KOCHI: The Kudumbasree movement in the district is surging ahead of its counterparts in other parts of the State. These are evident from the figures released at the end of the last financial year.

The urban sector in the district has recorded a good performance, in both individual and group benefiting activities. Figures show that a lot of projects were allotted under the Urban Self-Employment Programme (USEP) and the Development of Women and Children in Urban Area (DWCUA), two components of the Suvarna Jayanthi Shahar Rozgar Yojana.

Out of the total 17,500 units sanctioned under USEP, the district has 1,869 units and out of 1,302 DWCUA project, the district's share is 271.

In the rural sector, micro-enterprises are supported from plan funds. Out of 674 group activities approved across the State, 37 are from Ernakulam. At the same time, it is yet to open an account in 813 individual activities programme.

"As the Government gives guidelines for providing employment to 50,000 women in rural sector, it is a separate package, and it is too early to analyse the results," said M.A. Aboobacker, Regional Director - Kudumbasree, Central Region, which covers Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad.

Out of the total urban thrift of Rs. 20.60 crores in the State, the district's contribution is Rs. 10.30 crores and in rural thrift, it is Rs. 30.92 crores out of Rs. 441.38 crores. In the rural sector, 52,482 Neighbourhood Groups (NHGs) were linked to banks and Rs. 189.29 crores were disbursed in the last financial year. Of this, 6,233 NHGs were from this district, which benefited from Rs. 14.09 crores of loans from banks.

Among the 333 Ashraya - Destitute Identification, Rehabilitation and Monitoring projects taken up across the State, 14 were from Ernakulam and it will be taking up 45 projects in the proposed 350 ones for the next year.

The district's share of glory was reiterated by the approval of Poverty Alleviation Programme for Mattancherry (PAM), the first town-specific project in the nation. As much as Rs. 4.69 crores has been allotted to 100 women group activities and 700 individual activities.

The financial assistance to group activities will be 50 per cent of the project cost or Rs. 1.25 lakh, whichever is less, and that for individual projects will be 15 per cent of the project cost or Rs. 7,500, whichever is less.
