Atomic Energy Board clears raft construction

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: After a post-tsunami inspection, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has cleared the construction of a new raft for the Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR).

The FBR is being built close to the sea at Kalpakkam and work was on when the December 26 tsunami hit the coast. Due to the seawater surge, about 3.5 lakh cubic metres of seawater and sludge had entered the FBR pit. This was removed and the area cleaned. After this, many samples were taken from the already completed concrete to test the strength of the structure.

A press release said that following the clearance, work on the 500 MWe FBR fresh raft had commenced. It added that 8000 cubic metres of concrete, 100 mm of fresh PCC layer using fly ash cement and fresh waterproofing was done towards preparatory work before laying the reinforcement.

The Bharatiya Nabhikiya Vidyut Nigam Limited, Kalpakkam, will try to complete the project ahead of the schedule despite the disruption caused, says Prabhat Kumar, Project Director.
