Letters to the Editor
Minutes before his sentence was to be announced, Bhura, the man convicted of raping a nurse, offered to marry her. But the victim demanded punishment for him saying: "He should be hanged so that such a horrendous act is not repeated." Full marks for her bold reply. However, AIDWA leader Brinda Karat's criticism of the Delhi court for accepting Bhura's application is surprising. After all, he had to be given a chance, whether he deserved it or not.
The court's action insults the courage of the victim. The judicial fraternity must move quickly to make amends for this grave lapse if it is not to lose the confidence of the people.
R. Rajesh,
The rapist's offer to marry his victim is sickening. The assumption that he had only to make an offer and that she would consent to becoming his wife is a huge assault on her self-worth.
B. Sasisekhar,
Bhura's offer to marry the girl he raped adds insult to injury. I recommend the sternest punishment.
Piyush Gupta,
