This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru said in the Lok Sabha on May 4 that the situation in Goa was grave and would become even graver in the event of the Portuguese authorities deporting any of the satyagrahis. Making a statement on the Goa situation on an adjournment motion tabled by Mr. M.S. Gurupadaswamy, PSP member from Mysore and others, the Prime Minister said that while there was persistent rumour that 22 satyagrahis had been deported to Portuguese East Africa, the Government was not able to confirm this. Further enquiry was in progress. The recent developments in Goa undoubtedly indicated a deepening of the crisis there and the Government were much concerned over it. Asked by Dr. Lanka Sundaram if, in view of the deteriorating situation, any change in the policy would be indicated, Mr. Nehru replied, "I cannot indicate that. Naturally, we have to keep the whole situation in view. We are pursuing a dynamic policy. Whatever change that we intend to make will undoubtedly be brought to the notice of the House. Obviously, I cannot indicate these things vaguely at such a time as this."
