Sutherland plans centre in Manila

Special Correspondent

Already signed up first client in the Philippines

CHENNAI: As a part of its strategy to de-risk its global operations, Sutherland Global Services, a customer management company in the BPO (business process outsourcing) space, has decided to set up a facility in Manila.

The Manila centre will go operational by next month. It will employ over 500 professionals in the initial phase. Eventually, it plans to scale up the number to 3,000.

In a telephone conversation from Manila, Dilip Vellodi, Chairman and CEO of the company, told this correspondent that the Manila centre would do back office and transaction processing work. It would also provide customer and technical support. Sutherland had zeroed in on the Philippines because of its robust infrastructure and talent pool. The company had already signed up its first client in the Philippines. "It is a multi-national financial services entity using a high degree of technology," Mr. Vellodi said. On the investment in the Philippines, he merely said, "it is substantial."

With over 10,000 employees worldwide, Sutherland manages operations on behalf of global clients in 14 locations in the U.S. (Rochester and Syracuse, New York), Canada (Vernon, British Columbia and Sault Ste Marie, Ontario) and India (Chennai, Mumbai). Since Sutherland provided a unique delivery model, its foray into the Philippines would further help the company offer its clients the best value by blending service delivery capability in emerging markets with exceptional human resources management, he said.

Mr. Vellodi said the Manila centre would "in no way impact the growth in India and other geographical areas." "We will continue to ramp our India operations and other locations as we expand our capacity in the Philippines," he added.
