PONDICHERRY: : Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Wednesday thanked his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for increasing the quantum of water from the Godavari to the Yanam region. Addressing presspersons here on his return from Hyderabad after holding talks with Mr. Reddy on Tuesday, he said that all along, Yanam (an enclave of the Union Territory in East Godavari district) was getting 19 cusecs. Mr. Reddy immediately agreed to his request to increase the quantum to 21 cusecs. Mr. Rangasamy said the Andhra Pradesh Government also agreed to waive Rs. 77 lakhs due from Pondicherry towards water cess. The State Government would acquire 52 acres to store water for supply to Yanam.
Rs. 15-crore scheme
As for the steps taken to solve drinking water problem in the Mahe region (an enclave in Kerala), he said the Kerala Water Supply Authority was implementing a Rs. 15-crore scheme to bring water from the Anjarakandy to Mahe. The Pondicherry Government so far paid Kerala Rs. 3 crores, and it would pay another Rs. 5 crores very soon before the final payment. Health Minister E. Valsaraj said pipelines were being laid to a distance of 25 km. Fifty per cent of the work was completed. The region would get assured water supply on completion of the scheme, said Mr. Valsaraj who represents Mahe.
Centre urged for funds
Mr. Rangasamy said the Centre was urged to sanction Rs. 5 crores for developing tourism-related infrastructure in the Yanam region. As there was no arrack shop in Yanam, Pondicherry sought the State Government's permission to transport bottled arrack from the government-run industry here.
