Venkataswami report can be made public: Congress

Special Correspondent

`It's for Government to decide what to do'

NEW DELHI: After having raised doubts over the credibility of the report by Justice S.N. Phukan in the Tehelka revelations, the Congress on Wednesday suggested that the Government should consider making public the report under preparation by Justice K. Venkataswami.

Mr. Justice Venkataswami had resigned as head of the probe panel towards the end of 2002 after the Congress-led opposition opposed his continuation as he also headed a railway panel.

The party spokesperson Anand Sharma said, now that Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee had made the position clear about the use of defence aircraft by Mr. Justice Phukan, the credibility of the report was itself in question. It was for the Government to decide what it wanted to do with the report. The Government was directed by the Lok Sabha Speaker last month to table the report of the Justice Phukan Commission of Inquiry.

Asked about the approach of the party to what was prepared by the previous panel chairman, Mr. Justice Venkatswami, Mr. Sharma said in the light of the latest development, the report that was under preparation should be made public to make clear the direction of the probe.
