ENFORCING THE CODE: Special Election Observer K.J. Rao looking at festoons during his visit to Kancheepuram on Wednesday.

KANCHEEPURAM: Large digital banners and cut-outs put up by the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam along the campaign route of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa here were removed on Wednesday on a direction from the Special Election Observer, K.J. Rao.

During a visit here, Mr. Rao ordered the removal of banners and party flags put up on both sides of Military Road. He later convened a meeting with officials and representatives of political parties and explained the model code of conduct.

He also visited Periyarnagar near Tollgate and inspected the hoardings, festoons and fluorescent lights put up there. Pointing to the party flags, festoons and hoardings, Mr. Rao told the Joint Secretary, Public Elections, Prahatha, and the Collector, R. Venkatesan, that such decorations violated the model code. He walked along the stretch and checked if electricity was being drawn from the overhead cables for the illuminated cut-outs. Spotting an outdoor power supply unit at Kannigapuram, the starting point for Ms. Jayalalithaa's campaign, Mr. Rao asked the technician manning it about the charges levied.

He asked the Superintendent of Police, R. Samuthirapandi, for the reason behind the stationing of an ambulance at Kannigapuram.

The police official said it was stationed there as part of the security measures for the Chief Minister. Mr. Rao also visited Thenambakkam and Orikkai .

The former DMK Minister, K. Ponmudi, presented a memorandum to Mr. Rao seeking action against the AIADMK for "misusing" official machinery.

Earlier, in Chennai, Mr. Rao met the Chief Electoral Officer, Naresh Gupta, and the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, P. Senthil Kumar, to discuss the conduct of elections in Kancheepuram and Gummidipoondi.
