BSNL to launch two WLL mobile schemes soon

Staff Reporter

Broadband service, Data One, to begin this month

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is to launch two new Wireless Local Loop (WLL) mobile schemes, Plan-100 and Plan-799, in Pathanamthitta Secondary Switching Area (SSA) in the next two weeks.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the BSNL general manager, C. Sasidharan, said that the Plan-100 scheme with a monthly rent of Rs. 100 and local call rate of Rs 1.20 (90 seconds) would be the cheapest mobile phone service in the State. Plan-799 will have a monthly rent of Rs. 200, besides a Plan charge of Rs. 599, Mr. Sasidharan said.

Expansion in phases

Initially, the new mobile phone facility would be made available in the telephone exchange limits of Thiruvalla, Kumbanad, Kozhencherry, Pathanamthitta, Ranni, Vadasserikkara, Konni, Adoor and Pandalam.

It would be extended to 20 more exchanges, later, he said.

However, Mr. Sasidharan, accompanied by the Deputy General Manager, G. Krishna Pillai, the Area Manager, M. Raghavan Nair and the Public Relations Officer, P.T. Thomas, said that the WLL mobile service would have a mobility restricted to the concerned Short Distance Charging Area (SDCA) limits.

According to Mr. Sasidharan, the Data One broadband service would also be launched in the SSA this month itself. The Data One service would be initially made available at exchanges in Thiruvalla, Kumbanad, Pandalam, Adoor, Pathanamthitta, Konni, Ranni and Kozhencherry in the SSA, he said.

Mr. Sasidharan said that BSNL was planning to give a total of 300 broadband connections in the SSA in the first phase. The BSNL had got not less than 37,000 cellular phone subscribers in the Pathanmthitta SSA as on May 1. It had been decided to reduce the transmission capacity of BSNL's Base Transmission Stations (BTS) to 20 W as per regulations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India with a view to minimising radiation-related health problems, he said.

The BSNL would commission 64 new mobile towers (BTS) in the SSA, taking its total to 100 by June-July, Mr. Sasidharan said.

An `open house' to redress the grievances of telephone subscribers would be held at Kuttoor, near Thiruvalla, in the last week of May.

The monthly `telecom adalat' at Thiruvalla Telecom Bhavan will be held on May 26. The complaints to taken up at the `adalat' should reach Philipose Mathew, Assistant General Manager, Telephone Bhavan, Thiruvalla, on or before May 15, he said.
