Four hurt in group clash

ANANTAPUR: Four persons were injured in a group clash at Iruvendula village of Singanamala mandal in the district on Wednesday.

According to the police, the groups led by Uppara Nagi Reddy and Golla Naganna were engaged in rivalry for long. Some 50 guava trees of Nagi Reddy were chopped allegedly by the rival group 10 days ago. Two days later, the groups clashed again.

The rivalry surfaced again when the two groups clashed on the outskirts by hurling bombs, this time over grazing of sheep.

Hailstorm toll up

HYDERABAD: The toll in the hailstorm that lashed the State went up to 31, with three more deaths due to thunderbolt, all in Krishna district, coming to light on Wednesday. - Special Correspondent

The death roll is likely to go up as detailed reports from some more districts are yet to be received. The present break-up of the toll is: Guntur - 11, Nalgonda - 9, Warangal - 4, Krishna - 3, Srikakulam - 2 and Prakasam and Adilabad one each.

Farmer ends life

Kakinada: A small farmer, Vanacharla Venugopalam (32), who owns four acres of land reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Seelamvari saavaram in Ramachandrapuram mandal on Wednesday. According to the police, the farmer was in distress following heavy debts and failure of crop owing to drought conditions. - Correspondent

Woman hacked to death

CUDDAPAH: Unidentified persons hacked to death a 30-year-old widow and inflicted severe stab wounds on three of her family members in Pullur village in Khajipet mandal in the early hours of Wednesday.

In an attack on the house of Lakshmaiah, a basket weaver, his daughter, Subbarathnamma, was killed, the police said. Lakshmaiah, his wife, Venkata Lakshmamma, and son, Suresh, suffered stab wounds.

Anita Sen declines comment

HYDERABAD: Anita Sen, wife of DGP, Swaranjit Sen, refused to comment on the ongoing controversy surrounding her in the child adoption racket.

"No comment," was her reply when reporters sought her opinion on the efforts to book a case against Shalini Mishra, the then Commissioner for Child Welfare and Women Development. She earlier inaugurated a training programme, in association with Satyam Foundation, for children of police personnel killed while in office.

Yagam begins

TIRUMALA: The TTD-sponsored "Kareri Isti Yagam" began on Wednesday at Parvati Mandapam, located on the Northwest bank of the Gogarbham dam, about two km from here. The aim of the five-day yagam was to propitiate and please the rain god.

Prominent among others who participated in the yagam included the TTD Executive Officer, A.P.V.N. Sharma, Special Officer, A.V. Dharma Reddy and others.

Repair works postponed

Rajahmundry: In the eleventh hour decision, the R&B Department has postponed the repair works to the rail-cum-road bridge over the Godavari. Earlier, it was announced that the bridge would be closed from Thursday for three months.

Panther caught, shifted to zoo

ANANTAPUR: Villagers of Tarimela in Singanamala mandal caught a panther with the help of Forest Department officials in the early hours of Wednesday. They laid a trap by hanging a bait on the fringes of the forest on the outskirts of the village and caught the wild cat.

After being tranquilised, the panther was shifted here later in the day and sent immediately to the Tirupati zoo by road.

Pirated CDs seized, 4 held

ANANTAPUR: The Anantapur town police on Tuesday raided several video parlours and seized more than 100 pirated CDs of new Telugu films, being screened in the theatres presently, and obscene films. Four persons were also arrested in this regard. Acting on a complaint given by the Cinema Halls Association in the One Town and Two Town, police formed a joint team and raided the video parlours. The police found pirated CDs of almost all new Telugu films being screened presently in cinema halls. - Staff Reporter

Army aspirants

KURNOOL: The Commissioner of Youth Services, G.N. Rao, has said Andhra Pradesh was under-represented in the Armed Forces. Mr. Rao who was here to supervise the pre-recruitment training on Wednesday, said Armed Forces was the largest provider of jobs with 5,000 to 6,000 posts allotted to the State. He said most of the candidates failed in the written test. To overcome the problem, the Youth Services department planned one-month orientation for 15,000 youth for a month at a cost of Rs. 3 crores in the State.

Man found dead

CUDDAPAH: A petty hotel owner, Venkataramana alias Papodu, (42), was found dead in a drain near the RTC bus stand in Jammalamadugu town on Wednesday. Venkataramana, belonging to Yadiki in Anantapur district, eked out a living by running a tiffin centre in Jammalamadugu. He left home on Tuesday evening and was found dead in a roadside drain with a bleeding head injury, according to the police. - Staff Reporter

SFI protests before college

CUDDAPAH: SFI activists staged dharna before Narayana junior college here on Wednesday, decrying conduct of summer classes for students. Corporate colleges were conducting special classes and taking up admissions much ahead of schedule, the SFI district secretary, T. Sunil, alleged. The Education Department officials were nonchalant at the violation of Government guidelines by corporate colleges, he alleged. On SFI's complaint, the Regional Inspection Officer of Intermediate Education, Iqbal Hussain, visited the college and served a show-cause notice on its management for conducting classes during holidays.
