Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Wednesday stood at 112.1 feet with an inflow of 185 cusecs and without any discharge. The level in the Vaigai dam was 30.74 feet with no inflow and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 1586 mcft.

Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed the city. Many low-lying areas were inundated. Traffic was disrupted following flooding of roads. Shoppers at the Chithirai exhibition had a disappointing evening.

Woman found murdered

A 60-year-old woman was allegedly murdered at her residence in Subramnaiapuram here on Wednesday.

According to the police, K. Arunadevi, a Sri Lankan national, was found dead with strangulation marks on her neck. The police suspect the incident to be a murder for gain. The Subramaniapuram police are investigating.

Corporation to install touch screen on tax

The Corporation Commissioner, D. J. Dinakkaren, has assured to initiate steps to mitigate the hardship faced by people while remitting profession tax and D and O licence fee.

Speaking at an executive committee meeting of the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Monday, he said measures would be taken to computerise the documents and provide touch screen at all four corporation zones within a month to enable the public to obtain the required information on taxes payable to the corporation. The tax remittance counters would be computerised to make the job easy.

Steps would also be taken to provide a lorry terminal at Koodal Nagar at the earliest, he said while replying to a plea by the chamber president, S. Rethinavelu. Presiding over the meeting, Mr. Rethinavelu pledged the chamber's support to the corporation in the latter's efforts to keep the city clean and tidy.

Religious classes

The Pannirutirumarai Manram on South Adi Street of Meenakshi Sundaresawar Temple will conduct classes on religion between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. from May 15 to 21 in commemoration of Tiruganasambandar guru puja. Students will be taught lessons in Tirumurai, basic disciplines and epics. Certificates will be distributed to the participants, says a release. — Staff Reporter
