JNTU centre set to use satellite data

Will help identify congested traffic, parking areas, accident-prone intersections

HYDERABAD: The Centre for Spatial Information Technology (CSIT), Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), hopes to put the data generated by CARTOSAT-1, an advanced satellite scheduled for launch on Thursday, for varied applications, including creation of urban infrastructure and identification maps.

As part of a project for development of urban information system funded by the Centre for Good Governance, the JNTU centre has done detailed field survey of urban infrastructure in selected areas of the city using GPS receivers and has created a database. "By using CARTOSAT-1 data, it will form base for creation of maps of urban infrastructure," says I.V. Murali Krishna, Head, CSIT.

The field data forms the baseline coordinate information for creation of a reference grid, for mapping using CARTOSAT-1 data and help in identification of congested traffic and parking areas, intersections prone to accidents and areas of historical significance. The satellite can create three-dimensional images of the terrain at a resolution of 2.5 metres that will enable monitoring of several highly relevant features like traffic congestion in urban areas, potential areas of landslide generation, crop yield and stress monitoring, explains Prof. Krishna.

Agri-monitoring system

The Centre for Spatial Information Technology is also working on integration of high-resolution remote sensing data along with GPS data towards developing agriculture monitoring system through site specific farming or precision farming method.

The GPS-based information along with field data about soil, ground water availability, extent of fertilizers and pesticides used will provide timely information and offer scope for advice to farmers about their crop health status.
