Four held for robberies

NEW DELHI: The Special Staff of the East Delhi police has arrested four persons allegedly involved in a spate of robberies in the area in the recent past.

The polie said the accused -- Mahesh Verma of Gandhi nagar, Nafisul Huq of Sitapur in U.P., Mohammad Yusuf of Mandawali Fazal pur, and Aftab Alam of Shakar Pur -- were nabbed following a raid conducted near national Highway 24 near the CNG Petrol Pump at Ghazipur. Two countrymade pistols with four live cartridges and one button actuated knive were recovered from their possession.

The police said during interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed that they were planning to rob a wine shop in Kalyan Puri and had procured the weapons for carrying out the daring crime. The police said Mahesh Verma was the mastermind and the planner of the gang activity and had been involved in a burglary in Krishna Nagar in 1993. At that time the leader of his gang was Mange Ram Sharma.

Incidentally, Mange and Mahesh had also been involved in the murder of jeweller of Jaipur two years ago. After committing the crime, they had decamped with a large amount of diamonds and jewellery.

However, as differences arose between Mahesh and Mange over distribution of loot property, Mahesh and his brother, Raju, allegedly Mange after taking him to Loni in Uttar Pradesh. Since then Mahesh had been leading the gang.

Most recently, the gang had struck at a house in Krishna Nagar. Posing as personnel of BSES who had come to change the old electricity meter, they had gained entry into the house. Then they had tied up all the inmates and on gun point had looted cash, jewellery and other items worth lakhs of rupees.
