Delivering the convocation address at the Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Research here, Ms. Dikshit said the Government was committed to providing the best courses to the students in the field of technical and vocational education.

NEW DELHI: The Director-General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), R.A. Mashelkar, has been elected Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences at its annual general meeting on Tuesday. The honour is in recognition of his distinguished and continuing achievements in original research in polymer science and engineering.

The Academy, established in 1863, has so far elected only seven Indians as foreign associates. It has 2,000 members and 360 foreign associates, of whom 190 have won the Nobel Prize.

Petition dismissed

NEW DELHI : The Delhi High Court has dismissed the petition filed by the suspended Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Raj Mohan Singh, and has asked him to pay a cost of Rs. 5,000 for wasting the time of the court.

In the petition, Mr. Singh had demanded setting up of a commission to investigate the alleged irregularities in the mid-day meal scheme, quashing of the promotion of Indira Yadav to the post of the Director (Primary Education) and appointment of G.S. Matharoo as Secretary to the Municipal Commissioner.

The Court took serious objection to the filing of the writ petition by Mr. Singh who is himself facing investigations for disproportionate assets by the Central Bureau of Investigation at the instance of the Central Vigilance Commission.

The Court not only wanted to know how Mr. Singh was affected by the appointment of the two Corporation officials, but also asked how he could point fingers at others when he himself was facing charges of corruption.

NEW DELHI: In a freak accident eight persons were injured when a rickshaw carrying acid collided with a matador van near Jahangirpuri in North-West Delhi on Wednesday. The collision caused the acid in the rickshaw to spill on to five pedestrians. A scooterist and another rickshaw-puller in the vicinity also suffered injuries. The driver of the matador van and the rickshaw-puller are both absconding.
