BANGALORE: Amaresh, who died at the Employees' State Insurance Hospital in Indiranagar, was to get married on June 1. His brothers, who were making arrangements for the wedding, had booked a hall in their native town of Devadurg in Raichur taluk. They had chosen his clothes and got the invitations printed. Veeresh, Amaresh's brother who was with him at the hospital, broke the news to family members. They had spoken to Amaresh two hours ago. Sharanabasappa, Amaresh's brother, said: "We were prepared to spend any amount to save him." Angry colleagues of Amaresh did not accept the hospital's explanation that he died after a heart attack. One of them said: "When he complained of chest pain, they should have at least done an ECG or referred him to another hospital." Amaresh's sister-in-law, Mangala, sat beside his body. "He never took a day's medical leave. In his seven years at the garment factory, he never called in sick," she said. She said her husband, Ramesh, who was in Raichur, had been making arrangements for the wedding.
A family
When they needed medical consultation, the more than 6,000 workers of the garment factory in Koramangala depended on the hospital. From their paltry salaries, they pay Rs. 50 to Rs. 100 each month. "We were all like a big family. We never thought this would happen to Amaresh," said his colleagues who had gathered at the hospital. The factory was closed for the day.
