Bangalore
THE STATE Government has given the green signal to Bangalore University to fill 67 of the 120 teachers' vacancies in the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). This decision virtually ends the ban on teacher recruitment, which was in force for nearly a decade in the university. The permission to recruit teachers, however, comes with a rider: the university will not ask for additional grants from the Government. The funds for payment of salaries to teachers should be mobilised from the university's internally generated resources. The approved UVCE posts include those of 16 professors, 17 readers and 34 lecturers. The State Cabinet had approved the posts after obtaining the Finance Department's concurrence, sources said. The Government has agreed to consider the university's request for filling 112 of 142 vacancies of teachers in other postgraduate departments of the university. But approval for recruitment will also be on the condition that the expenditure on salary will be met from the varsity's own resources. When contacted, the University Vice-Chancellor, M.S. Thimmappa, said he is happy with the approval for recruitment. "Running the courses with guest faculty is not in the interest of quality education. We were not able to get the best lecturers with the amount allotted for guest faculty," he said.
