TENSE MOMENTS: Employees of a garment factory staging a protest at the ESI Hospital in Indiranagar, Bangalore, on Wednesday. Photo: K. Murali Kumar
BANGALORE: Garment factory workers went berserk at the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) Hospital in Indiranagar on Wednesday morning, alleging that negligence on the part of doctors led to the death of their colleague, Amaresh (26). They shattered glass panes and threw out hospital records. It required a large police posse to disperse the mob of 800 people. Several workers were removed when they staged a dharna in the hospital corridor demanding quick action against "those guilty." The incident paralysed hospital work for over three hours. Amaresh, a tailor at a garment factory in Koramngala, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday morning after he complained of back pain. He reported chest pain in the evening. By around 8 p.m., he was reportedly administered an injection and given food. Amaresh's relatives and colleagues alleged that the injection caused the death. The police have registered a case of negligence leading to death, under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, against the hospital authorities. This followed a complaint by Amaresh's brother, Veeresh. Amaresh's body was sent to Bowring Hospital for an autopsy. High drama followed the death of Amaresh. By about 11 a.m., his factory colleagues gathered outside the hospital premises. Security guards could do nothing as the factory employees barged in and started questioning the hospital staff. The hospital's Chief Medical Officer, Ramaiah, lodged a police complaint, reporting property losses of Rs. 50,000 in the violence. The police took up a case of rioting and arrested 18 persons including three women. The Director of ESI Hospitals, Vinay Kumari, told The Hindu that the matter is being investigated. She said she cannot say that Amaresh died because of negligence on the part of doctors. She asked how the police have registered a case of negligence leading to death even before the autopsy report has been received. The ESI Hospital Medical Superintendent declined to comment.
Similar incident
A similar incident was reported from the Ashoknagar police station limits on Tuesday night, where a protest against alleged negligence of doctors was staged after the death of a woman who had undergone surgery. The police said her relatives refused to pay the hospital charges alleging that she died because of negligence on the part of doctors. The police intervened and settled the matter. The police denied reports that the protestors threw stones at the hospital building.
