Model nikahnama

This refers to the editorial, `Three words still mean divorce' (May 5). Though the All India Muslim Personal Law Board has taken a bold step in recommending some changes in the law, they are far from being adequate. The model nikahnama has failed to end the highly discriminatory provision of triple talaq practised in India. Unless this is rooted out, there is little for Muslim women to rejoice in the model nikahnama.

Priya M. Meenakshi,
Chennai

As rightly pointed out in the editorial, the model nikahnama does not address the infirmities and unfair inflictions on the weaker sex by the misuse of triple talaq. An intelligent study of the Koran as a whole can lead to a harmonious interpretation of the various laws based on the contemporary socio-economic conditions.

Kasim Sait,
Chennai

The model nikahnama is a masterpiece. It safeguards the rights, interests, and privileges of Muslim women more effectively than any law, bylaw or legal document of the land. The issue of triple talaq has been tactfully dealt with.

The elaborate procedures and methodolgies prescribed by the AIMPLB, if faithfully implemented, will nullify the practice of triple talaq. Such far-sighted moves should be welcomed. Denouncing them as dangerous will only alienate the country's largest minority community.

T. Azeez Luthfullah,
Chennai
