MANAMA: High intensity violence has continued to rock Iraq, with the killing of another 23 persons in multiple attacks that targeted security forces in Baghdad. A suicide bomber struck at a police recruitment centre at the Muthanna air base, killing at least 13 persons and wounding eight. Guerillas have frequently targeted recruits, who are seen as collaborators of U.S. occupation forces. There have been several attacks on the air base, which is not far from the Green Zone the seat of the American occupation as well as the new Parliament. In another incident, nine police officers died when gunmen fired at two police patrols in the western part of the city. The policemen were inside stationary police cars when they were attacked. The assailants later set the vehicles ablaze.
Wave of violence
The new attacks came a day after a mega-strike in the Kurdish city of Irbil killed 60 persons. There has been an upsurge in violence since Shia Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari unveiled a partial Cabinet line-up on April 28. Over 200 persons, including scores of Kurds have died in the flurry of attacks. The new wave of violence is heightening sectarian tensions between Sunni, Shia and Kurdish communities.
