ERODE: There is a considerable increase in the milk production in the district. The Erode District Milk Producers Cooperative Union (Erode Aavin) on Thursday collected 2,60,000 litres of milk from farmers as against the collection of 1,98,000 litres last year. The Erode Aavin has 729 Milk Producers Cooperative Societies through which it collects milk at Chitode. According to the officials of the Erode Aavin, availability of good variety of fodder and water to milch animals and the necessary medical care given by Aavin to them are the reasons for the increased milk production. The officials expect 2.60 lakh to 2.75 lakh litres of milk daily till July end. Of the 729 milk societies, 144 are maintained by women. They supply milk to the Erode Aavin and get money once in ten days. These societies supply 50,000 litres of milk a day.
STEP for women
With an intention to involve women in dairy development, the Union and State Governments have jointly announced a scheme "Support for Training and Employment Programme" (STEP). Under the scheme, 20 milk societies are run by women in the district. The Governments have provided Rs. 2,000 for each society as subsidy besides granting 6 stainless steel milk cans of forty litre capacity, milk testers and other equipment. In addition, the Erode Aavin is providing 25 paise per litre of milk supplied by the society as special commission. Daily, around 7,000 litres of milk is procured from these societies.
SHGs involved
Similarly in Kadambur and Kottamalam forest areas, women Self Help Groups are supplying 600 litres of milk daily. The Erode Aavin is planning to provide bulk containers to the societies, as the milk collected from farmers may be stored in these containers for two days and transported to the Aavin. The Erode Aavin is dispatching ghee to Tirumala for the preparation of "laddu". It also sends 12 lakh litres of milk per month to Delhi through the specially designed railway containers. Because of the quality and taste of the milk, the demand has increased. It is expected that at least 15 lakh litres of milk will be sent to Delhi per month.
