CHENNAI: . Motion Picture Association, an organisation campaigning against video piracy on behalf top Hollywood studios, on Wednesday launched an short film with a message on piracy to be screened in movie halls in the city. The message of the movie is straightforward: piracy is nothing but theft. Representatives of MPA said copyright theft cost MPA member companies, including Paramount, Columbia and MGM, an estimated $896 million in lost revenues in 2004 in the Asia-Pacific region alone. Worldwide losses were estimated at $3 - $4 billion. Michael C. Ellis, regional director (Asia-Pacific region), MPA said: "India is fast-emerging as a key market and Indian law enforcement agencies are doing good work to combat piracy. However the public has an important role to play as well by rejecting pirated goods." Chander Lall, legal counsel for the MPA, lauded the Tamil Nadu Government decision to book video pirates under the Goondas Act. "We would want to cite the Tamil Nadu model of combating piracy as a national and international model." Apart from working for Hollywood studios, the MPA have also worked in association with the Kerala Film Producers Association to carry out raids there. The association is also holding talks with the Tamil Nadu Film Producers Association to carry out joint action.
